QUANDO IL DUCE SI FERMO' A COSTACCIARO
Costacciaro
– La notizia storica, con tanto di foto, sale agli onori della
cronaca, perché quasi inedita. Euro Puletti, docente e storico, ha
indagato a fondo, intervistando alcuni testimoni. Un racconto
documentato ed intenso, forse sconosciuto agli storici o, se
conosciuto, mai evidenziato.Era un caldo pomeriggio di domenica 21
luglio 1935, Anno XIII dell’Era Fascista, quando un furibondo
incendio, favorito dal vento e dall'arsura estiva, divorò, in breve
tempo, il grano, l’orzo, l’avena, la paglia, il fieno ed i
pagliai delle cosiddette “are” (aie) del Piedicolle di
Costacciaro.L’incendio si era sviluppato, forse per una scintilla
partita dalla puleggia della trebbia, nelle aie poste ai piedi di
Costacciaro, oltre il Torrione (oggi via Piedicolle) ed aveva
bruciato, come accennato, su di un’estensione piuttosto vasta,
l’intiero raccolto del grano, dell’orzo e diversi pagliai, di
paglia e fieno, oltre ad una capanna agricola, per un totale di ben
400 quintali di granaglie.Il Duce, che, d’estate, diretto verso la
sua Romagna ed il Mare Adriatico, transitava spesso lungo la
Flaminia, giunto in località San Rocco, fu implorato
di fermarsi da un nutrito gruppo di Costacciaroli che, sciamando,
invasero la sede stradale in entrambi i sensi di marcia. Fu, in
particolare, il sempre ardimentoso Cardino Mattrella (classe 1901),
il quale, sprezzante del pericolo cui andava certamente incontro,
fermò l’autocolonna e la staffetta del Duce. Alla storica ed
indimenticabile scena assistette, appena sopraggiunto da Gualdo
Tadino, dove aveva da poco inaugurato la locale colonia elioterapica
estiva, anche il Federale Ermanno di Marsciano.Cardino,
immediatamente bloccato dai camerati fascisti, i quali pensarono
subito che questi dovesse essere un pericoloso sovversivo ed un
attentatore, chiese, quindi, aiuto direttamente al Duce, per i poveri
contadini che avevano perduto tutto quanto il loro raccolto, dura
fatica e molle sudore d’un intiero anno. Udito il toccante racconto
dell’incendio e del raccolto perso, e vedute scendere, copiose, le
lacrime di ben 26 fra piccoli proprietari e contadini, il Duce,
descritto in abiti marinareschi, diede perentorie disposizioni per
l’immediato indennizzo, che, puntuale, ed ammontante a ben seimila
lire, non tardò minimamente ad arrivare in Comune e ad essere
riscosso nel locale ufficio postale.Questa storia, davvero fuori
dell’ordinario, mi è stata narrata da una diretta spettatrice
dell’evento che, all'epoca dei fatti, non era ancora che una
bambina di sette anni: Concetta Gambucci di Costacciaro, classe 1928.
La famiglia di Concetta fu una di quelle, prima colpite dalla
calamità e, poi, risarcite dal Duce. A documentare la sosta del Duce
a Costacciaro è, poi, recentemente apparsa una foto di straordinario
ed unico valore storico. L’immagine, di piccolo formato, fu
scattata dal signor Callisto Mannoni di Costacciaro, poi emigrato,
per lavoro, negli Stati Uniti. E, negli Stati Uniti, questa,
all'apparenza, insignificante immagine rimase dimenticata in un
cassetto, fino a quando, essa, non fu donata ad una tale signora
Assunta che volle, così, riportarla a Costacciaro. Lo scatto mostra
la facciata della bellissima casa della Signora Lilia Cavalieri,
esternamente gremita di gente. Gente che appare quasi in estatica
contemplazione di due automobili scoperte, e di grossa cilindrata,
anch’esse cariche di persone, sulla seconda delle quali, seduto al
lato destro del guidatore, si intravede Benito Mussolini, vestito in
giacca nera e camicia bianca e con il capo coperto da un cappello
nero. Fra le autorità presenti, il già citato Federale Ermanno di
Marsciano ed il Podestà di Costacciaro Umberto Fantozzi, nonché i
noti personaggi locali Cardino Mattrella, Curzio Bartoletti e
Guerrino Rafoni. Il lodevolissimo Presidente del Centro Socio
Culturale Onlus “Le Fonti” di Costacciaro, Signor Angelo Galli,
non appena vista la foto, e compresane immediatamente l’importanza,
ne ha voluto subito fare una riproduzione, esponendola, quindi,
insieme ad altre interessantissime vedute d’epoca del paese, alle
pareti interne del centro da lui magistralmente diretto. Oltre ad

MATTRELLA UMBERTO
WATERBURY — Mr. Umbert A. Mattrella, 81, died peacefully at his home on Friday, Feb. 20, 2009, embraced by his immediate family. He was the husband of Gloria Gentile Mattrella.
Mr. Mattrella was an engineer with Pratt & Whitney, United Technologies and the U.S. Department of Defense in various Connecticut cities. He was a man of abiding faith and strong principles. He was a parishioner of Saint Leo the Great Church in Waterbury where he served as a eucharistic minister. He was also an active volunteer at the Saint Mary's Hospital pharmacy.
Mr. Mattrella was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Gloria G. Mattrella; his children, Brenda Mattrella and Karen Mattrella of Waterbury, Linda Mattrella and Christian Mattrella of New York City, N.Y, the late David Mattrella of Palm Bay, Fla.; and two granddaughters, Lauren and Alexa Vaughan, both now in college.
He spent much of his spare time with his friends, children and grandchildren, including attending their performances and sporting events. He was an avid gardener and well known for his prize-winning tomatoes. He loved to sail at Lake Quassapaug and Candlewood Lake with his children. In addition, Mr. Mattrella leaves behind several nieces and nephews as well as many other close relatives in the Waterbury area.
Arrangements: The funeral will be held 10 a.m. Monday from Chase Parkway Memorial/The Albini Family Funeral Home, 430 Chase Parkway, Waterbury, to Saint Leo the Great Church, 14 Bentwood Drive, Waterbury, for a Mass at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Calling hour will be 9 to 10 a.m. Monday, prior to the funeral.
